Forum launches security initiative for Umbilo

The launch took place at Wardkiss Hardware and was followed by a motorcade through the Umbilo area and a canal clean-up.

THE Umbilo Business Forum (UBF) has put a new security plan in place with the help of Umbilo firm, Mzanzi Security.

After the official launch event a motorcade made its way through Umbilo with tactical support from SAPS under W/O Paddayachee from the Umbilo division, Parks and Culture providing rubbish removal support together with vital support from Durban Solid Waste’s Mdu Zwane, who provided health and safety support for the clean-up of the much abused Alan Paton Aqueduct.

The canal clean-up was supported by Councillor Mmabatho Tembe and Thembisa Sokutu. Nosi Tshabalala of the ANC joined the work party and offered her party’s welcomed support. The Area Based Management team arrived under the team leadership of Batho Mkhize and also lent a helping hand.

“The purpose of the canal clean-up was to prepare the covering of the aqueduct to create a truck stacking facility which will alleviate congestion on Sydney Road. It was an excellent example of public-private co-operation,” said the UBF’s Ian Campbell-Gillies.

He said the UBF intends adding 100 new companies to its membership list this year.

“In this time of lawlessness, xenophobia and service delivery failure, the successful business becomes the only secure entity capable of ensuring peace and functionality. We need to co-operate at every level to maintain stability in the area during this time of politically induced unrest. The UBF encourages citizens to join hands in law-abiding ventures throughout the city to regenerate the potential that we all carry,” he said.
