Woolworths robbers linked to other local cases

The men who were arrested for the robbery have also been linked to other business robberies in Umbilo and Durban Cluster.

UMBILO SAPS confirmed the arrest of three men who have been linked to recent armed robberies in the area.

On Saturday, Capt Pumzile Makaula from Umbilo SAPS said the Umbilo SAPS Task Team, Crime Intelligence and Umlazi K9 Unit had arrested the suspects in Mayville.

“The suspects were arrested for a business robbery which took place on Wednesday, 27 March at Woolworths on Bulwer Road. An undisclosed amount of money was recovered,” she said.

Speaking about the incident at Woolworths, CPF chair, Heather Rorick, said the incident occurred at around 5pm, when the shop was full of customers.

“A car stopped outside the shop in Helen Joseph Road and one of the Bulwer Ambassadors, Patric Cira, noticed a man get out. He greeted Patric and went inside the entrance by the parking lot, and was greeting all the customers! After this, a man came from inside the shop, after entering on the Bulwer Road side, and told Patric to go inside and lie down,” she said.

Rorick said the Ambassador in Bulwer Road had noticed Patric wasn’t on the road and then saw customers lying on the floor of the shop. He ran down to the Metro hut at Davenport Centre, however it was unmanned, an issue she said she would be addressing with Metro Police.

“He got hold of me and I called Lt Col Perumall from Umbilo SAPS who sent police to the scene. There were five men in the shop, and a driver, who had parked the get-away vehicle in Bulwer Road. The men were not nervous, and were seasoned professionals. Thankfully no one was hurt in the robbery,” she said.

Capt Makaula said the men who were arrested for the robbery have also been linked to other business robberies in Umbilo and Durban Cluster.
