Time of the Writer Festival programme announced

THE University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Centre for Creative Arts has announced the programme for the 22nd Time of the Writer Festival (TOW), taking place from 13 to 16 March at various venues around Durban. Celebrating Durban’s status as the UNESCO World City of Literature, the festival has partnered with the eThekwini Municipality and invited South African writers who will engage in activities across the city.
The compact programme features 13 Southern African writers: Zimbabwe’s Sue Nyathi is a research analyst at a stockbroking firm, who has published two novels Polygamist (2012) and Gold Diggers (2018) and is currently writing a third novel, The Gold Rush.
The strong line-up of Durban writers include: Slungile Mavundla, who manages various South African gospel artists and is currently finishing an autobiography entitled Owesifazane Onamandla (Strength of a Women). Former Mr. Gay South Africa and a Mr Gay World Top 10 finalist, Siyathokoza Khumalo writes about religion, sex and politics from a gay, Black, Christian male’s perspective in You Have To Be Gay To Know God. Sihle Mthembu is an award-winning journalist, filmmaker and co-author together with Esinako Ndabeni of the bookBorn to Kwaito which unpacks one of the most important music genres to emerge post-apartheid.

Cyril James is author of Many a Cold Night and A Chain of Friendship and Sifiso Mzobe, author of the novel Young Blood, was winner of the Best First Time Published Author Award at the 2011 South African Literacy Awards. Arts, culture and heritage practitioner and the author of Uqobo Lwethu – Incwadi yezithakazelo Mandla KaNozulu completes the local line-up.
Added to the mix are award-winning actress, TV and radio presenter, TV and film producer, Rosie Motene, and Lerato Mogoatlhe,journalist and content editor at Global Citizen a movement of that aims to use their collective voice to end extreme poverty. The programme has been curated by guest curator, writer and activist Niq Mhlongo through the Andrew Mellon Foundation’s partnership with UKZN in its ‘Artist in Residency’ programme, who will also be part of the programme.

The event is free, and tickets will be on a first come-first-serve basis. All other events at KZNSA Gallery, Auditorium Hall (Sizakala Centre, Zazi Road, Clermont) and Grosvenor Library (3 Wesley Rd, Grosvenor) are free and all are welcome.
