WATCH: High police presence at DUT as protests continue

DUT's Steve Biko Campus is on a shutdown and people are urged to avoid the area.

THE atmosphere outside Durban University of Technology’s Steve Biko campus this morning is tense.

This follows the death of a student during yesterday’s protest action.

The campus is being monitored by a heavy police presence as hundreds of Student Representative Council (SRC) members and students continue with protests this morning.

While the protests have been peaceful thus far, the public is urged to avoid the area. The campus is still on shutdown.

Addressing the media this morning, DUT SRC President Sesiyanda Godlimpi, said they were saddened that students were being killed by the very people that were “supposed to be protecting” them.

He said the SRC handed in their memorandum of demands to the executive committee yesterday, but instead of ‘fruitful and healthy’ communication they were met with threats of expulsion.

“Many students, some first year students and other returning students are blocked from registering or securing res simply because they could not effort either,” he said.

Godlimpi said the SRC would fight tirelessly for free education, which had been promised by former President Jacob Zuma and current President Cyril Ramaphosa.
