Morningside car thief handcuffed to steering wheel

A man was apprehended by a Blue Security officer in Morningside.

SWIFT team work lead to the arrest of an alleged car thief who was handcuffed to the steering wheel of the vehicle he had attempted to steal in Morningside on Thursday morning.

Blue Security’s media liaison officer Andreas Mathios said a Blue Security CCTV camera operator the control centre spotted the suspect getting into a vehicle in Eleventh Avenue and immediately alerted a patrolling armed response officer.

The incident occurred at around 4.20am.

“The armed response officer responded to the scene and found the suspect sitting inside the vehicle.”

“He questioned the suspect, asking him who the vehicle belonged to and the suspect was unable to provide an explanation. The officer arrested the suspect and handcuffed him to the steering wheel,” Mathios said.

Mathios said the officer made contact with the owner of the vehicle, a local resident, who advised that he did not know the suspect and that he had not given him permission to enter the vehicle.
“The suspect was handed over to the Berea SAPS,” Mathios said.
