Roadblocks to deal with child maintenance defaulters

"Our roadblocks will be different in nature."

CHILD maintenance defaulters will be arrested or fined at roadblocks during this festive season. This was revealed by MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mxolisi Kaunda, at Albert Park last week.

Kaunda was speaking during the crime clean-up campaign held in collaboration with eThekwini Mayor, Councillor Zandile Gumede, Provincial CPF board and the Police.

“Our roadblocks will be different in nature as they will include the department of justice, home affairs, labour, SARS customs unit and all law enforcement agencies. The type of roadblocks we will be conducting this season are aimed at dealing with the problems we are faced with in our communities. The first one is the high increase of drugs and counterfeit goods which stifle the growth of our economy. During these roadblocks we will also be on the look-out for those who are child maintenance defaulters. They will be stopped and their ID scanned to ensure that they do not owe any child maintenance monies. If you are found to be defaulting you will be expected to settle your debt or face the full might of the law,” said Kaunda.

The visit by the MEC is part of the inner city regeneration programme that aims to ensure a clean and safe environment for all to enjoy. The campaign will be rolled out to other areas in the city. Earlier, Mayor Zandile Gumede was taken on a walkabout in the morning and visited problem buildings in the Albert Park area.

Addressing the crowd, Chairperson of the KZN Community Policing Forum (CPF), Prince Mathenjwa said they would be working closely with the city to improve the safety of people living in the city. We have observed how our people are living, we hope that in the incoming year their conditions will be improved.

“As part of the province’s crime combating drive, it is imperative to strengthen relations with various stakeholders to intensify the fight against crime. We commit ourselves to work with everyone to make the city liveable for everyone,” said Mathenjwa.

“During these holidays the focus is more on educating people, the intention of these roadblocks is not to punish people but to raise awareness and educate those on the road. The general safety of our people is our priority. We also want our police to be more on the ground, foot-patrolling and more visible,” concluded Kaunda.
