Settlers’ oldies enjoy season’s festivities

The annual Christmas charity event was held at Natal Settlers' Coronation House.

SEVEN local businesses joined forces with Glenwood Presbyterian Church to bring a little festive spirit into the lives of the elderly at Natal Settlers’ Coronation House recently.

The annual lunch event is in its fourth year and one that residents look forward to the entire year.

The day started with the residents being served tea and mince pies while they were entertained by musicians Stanley Lipschitz and Stephen Abrahams who took them on a trip down memory lane, singing some golden oldie songs as well as some well-known Christmas carols.

“Some of the residents who were able got up and danced and sang along to the music. Those in wheelchairs also got involved as they held up their hands and sang. It was such a delightful time to see the absolute joy on the faces of the residents. Staff from the businesses ensured they spent time chatting to the residents, dancing with them and serving them to ensure they felt loved and cared for, and to remind them that they are not forgotten members of our society,” said Hayley Marot.

The residents were then served a delicious Christmas lunch and pudding after which they had a surprise visit from Santa, and each received a gift bag filled with goodies to enjoy. “There were tears of joy and sheer delight as these gifts were handed out!” she said.

The event was made possible by the businesses who gave their time to make this event possible. A special thanks went to Marot and Sanders Brandvertising Magic and Media, Dirks Davenport, Peppers and Pans Catering, Idube Safety, Rotary Club of Durban, Posh events by Design, and musicians Stanley Lipschitz and Stephen Abrahams.
