UKZN lecturer and Durban based pianist and composer Sibusiso Mash Mashiloane, dedicated his Best Artiste in African Jazz, All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) to his mother.

The awards ceremony was held in Ghana this past weekend. Durban artist Shekhinah walked away with Best Female Artiste in Southern Africa, while Nasty C won the Best Male Artiste in Southern Africa.

According to the pianist the song was influenced by his background: “I have listened to and watched a lot of traditional dancers, from iZangoma to amaSokane and the sound and movements are what inspired me to compose Niza,” he said.

In his acceptance speech Mashiolane thanked his family, church, colleagues, his students and the media for the support: “This award is for my mother, may her soul rest in peace Ndlondlo. Thanks to our early musicians who stood the testing times in documenting their talents and our community stories. Thanks to the band I recorded with and my management team. I recognise myself and my music as embedded in the society that I call home and would not be able to compose the music I do without the influence of my country and the city I live in. This makes me extra proud to be able to represent my culture through music and be recognised for the creation of it.”
