Leaking Kings Park pool closed for repairs

Kings Park Pool will be closed until next year following excessive water loss revealed cracks in the pool.

DUE to sudden excessive water loss at the Kings Park Indoor Swimming Pool, the Parks, Recreation and Culture Unit has temporarily closed the facility to allow for an investigation into the matter.

EThekwini Spokesperson, Msawakhe Mayisela, said this was done after careful deliberation with all concerned parties, including KwaZulu-Natal Aquatic. The envisioned completion date is the end of February 2019.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the pool had been losing approximately 100 000 litres per day. A camera survey also revealed there were defective cracks, missing expansion joints, surface damages and holes. The filtration circulation pipes also had inconclusive evidence of leaks and need to be pressure tested and leakages repaired accordingly,” said Mayisela.

The closure will also allow for the repair of the structural and sub-surface latent defects in the roofing systems which were experienced after the October 2017 winds.

“Residents will be notified of the re-opening upon completion of the work to be done. We apologise for the inconvenience,” said Mayisela.
