Historic monument unveiled at Mitchell Park

The official unveiling of the busts of King Goodwill Zwelithini, Nelson Mandela and the Sivananda Peace Pillar was on 8 November.

KING Goodwill Zwelithini and Mangosuthu Buthelezi were among the important guests at the unveiling of a historic monument at Mitchell Park on Thursday.

The monument, including busts of King Goodwill Zwelithini, Nelson Mandela and the Sivananda Peace Pillar, is a project which was the initiative of world renowned philanthropist, humanitarian and businessman Ishwar Ramlutchman.

Zwelithini was present to unveil his bust, while Buthelezi unveiled the bust of the late former state president Nelson Mandela, and businessman Vivian Reddy, unveiled a wall which is part of the monument, which details the history of the Indian indentured labourers in South Africa, the history of the first Coloureds in South Africa, the history of the Boers/Afrikaaners in South Africa, the preamble of the Constitution, the life and times of King Goodwill Zwelithini and the life and times of Nelson Mandela, depicting a South African rainbow nation.

According to Ramlutchman, he was touched by the simplicity and the contribution of the King and Dr Nelson Mandela to society and decided to honour them by commissioning this monument of peace.

He said the historic monument, which is supported by the provincial heritage agency AMAFA, will serve as a symbol of reconciliation and tolerance and will also highlight the heritage of the pioneers, the courage and commitment of the freedom fighters, the wisdom, passion, and determination of the visionaries of a non-racial and a democratic South Africa.
