Glenwood High honours former learner

"This will also encourage those coming after me that hard work pays."

PROTEAS national team selector, Linda Zondi said he is extremely humbled and thankful, following the naming of Glenwood High School’s (GHS) Cricket Academy in his honour at the school on Monday.

Zondi joined the school in 1992 after receiving a cricket scholarship and later played a part in the founding of the school’s cricket academy.

“Coming from a disadvantaged background, it was a life changing opportunity to receive a scholarship at the school. We were selected to represent the province development team to play against Glenwood. I managed to perform well against the school and they were kind enough to offer me a scholarship. In 1995 I was fortunate to be chosen to represent the national U19 team which toured England,” he said.

“I was again approached by the school to start a Cricket Academy which led to the formation of other academies in the school. I left the school around 2007 and started the Sunfoil cricket academy which led us to where we are now. It is important for every kid to know that you are not going to be judged by your background. It is up to you where you end up. You must be determined, take the opportunities as they come. This honor by the school shows that they recognize the contribution and will also encourage those coming after me that hard work pays. I looking forward to continuing with this work of unearthing young cricketing talent,” concluded Zondi.

Health MEC Dr Sibogiseni Dhlomo was among those who congratulated Zondi on his latest feat. Zondi also works as a manager in KZN Health MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo’s office. The Academy has proved to be a major success, producing many KZN and SA schools representatives in recent years. Recent successes are Mthokosizi Shezi (South Africa, Dolphins, and Cobras), Cody Chetty (South Africa “A”, Dolphins), Andile Phehlukwayo (South Africa “A”, Dolphins), Prenalin Subrayen (Dolphins), and Brandon Scullard (Dolphins).
