Durban CBD armed robbery foiled, suspects arrested

A security guard was able to sound the alarm and call for help in the emergency which averted the robbery.

A QUICK thinking security guard foiled an armed robbery in the Durban CBD last week when he pressed a panic button that caused the gang which had held up staff to immediately turn and flee the scene.

Police later arrested three suspects who were hiding out in a nearby hotel.

Blue Security community and media liaison officer, Andreas Mathios said five armed suspects had walked into the business in Florence Nzama Road, posing as customers at around 12.45pm.

“The gang held up the staff and security guard at gunpoint and grabbed the security guard’s firearm. The security guard managed to press a panic alarm to alert armed response officers to the scene,” Mathios said.

Some of the suspects fled on foot into Dr Pixley KaSeme Street and ran into a nearby hotel while others fled in a black Mercedes Benz.

Mathios advised business owners to install CCTV surveillance cameras linked to the business alarm system on their premises.

“Fortunately in this case the security guard was able to sound the alarm and call for help in the emergency which averted the robbery. It is important that all business staff are regularly trained in security procedures so that staff instinctively know what action to take in the event of a robbery,” Mathios said.
