Battle lines redrawn at city race

The FNB Durban 10K CITYSURFRUN is on Sunday, 14 October.

THABANG Mosiako will spearhead South Africa’s attack at the second annual FNB Durban 10K CITYSURFRUN on Sunday, 14 October.

Mosiako will be joined by Elroy Gelant and the impressive Ryan Mphahlele, among others.

The latter has been in scintillating form all year and intends to make a statement in Durban after winning the SA 4km U23 Cross Country title on 9 September and winning on his debut over 5000m on Saturday, 22 September, clocking 14:00.09 at the opening of the Pietermaritzburg stadium.

Mphahlele was almost a minute ahead of his nearest rival and his time is the fastest by a South African in 2018 – 10 seconds ahead of Elroy Gelant (14:10.91). Mphahlele is not one to ignore on race day.

“I cannot wait for Durban. I have had such a good year and this will be a great opportunity to sign off the year with a bang,” said Mphahlele.

Elroy Gelant continues to improve after an operation in April and is hungry for a fast time to finish off his 2018 season. “I have been getting better all the time and Durban will be my last race of the season, so of course I want to give it my all.”

Both Mosiako and Gelant will feature in the SA 10km Championships this coming weekend which gives them another opportunity to sharpen for the Durban race.

Already confirmed in the men’s race is the defending champion, Joshua Cheptegei. Cheptegei has threatened to break 27:20 in Durban and his result at the Dam-tot-Damloop in Zaandam, Netherlands on Sunday, 23 September is ominous indeed.
