It’s Dublin or bust for young rugby talent

Reece Meiring stays with relatives who are pensioners and have no income to pay for a rugby training trip to Ireland.

A PROMISING young rugby player is appealing to the community to make a rugby training trip to Dublin next November a reality for him.

Reece Meiring, (14), started playing rugby in Grade 4 while at Penzance Primary and fell in love with the game. A highlight of his rugby career in primary school was playing 7s in the U12 division at Michaelhouse.

Now in Grade 9 at Glenwood High School, he said he started taking his game seriously at the beginning of Grade 8. “I love playing rugby and at Glenwood, rugby is now my main sport and I am taking it to the next level,” he said.

Reece travelled to Eastern Cape in March to play in a tournament and also played in the BizSport Festival during the April school holidays.

He said he was excited to have been selected as one of the 30 boys from Glenwood High to travel to the Independent Irish Rugby Academy in Dublin next November for 11 days, where the players will be coached by top internationals.

“This is an awesome opportunity, a real once-in-a-lifetime thing. It will really help with my game and be amazing for my future,” said Reece, who dreams of one day playing for the Springboks.

Reece said his only obstacle is the cost of the trip, which is around R43 000. He lives with relatives who are pensioners and have no income to pay for this trip.

He has applied to companies for sponsorship and also contacted ECR’s The Big Favour, but to date has had no response.” I will do what it takes to get there. I’m the kind of person who will fight until my knuckles go white if I really want something. I have set my heart on this and would appreciate it if people could contribute, no matter how small. If this doesn’t happen for me though, I know I am blessed and I’m thankful that I can get up and go play rugby,” he said.

If anyone can help, they can contact Reece on 074 612 2049 or Lyn on 072 345 2667.
