Feeding scheme gets support

"Quite a few residents have come to donate food items, so we are very happy."

A FEEDING scheme at Carrington Primary School has received much-needed support from the community.

The scheme, which has been in operation at the school since 1999, ensures learners receive a cooked meal each day.

Umbilo resident, and father of children attending the school, Neil Fynn, has been involved with the project for the past month, and posted about the scheme on social media.

Heather Rorick, chairperson of the Bulwer Safety and Urban Regeneration Forum (BSURF), said she saw the post and wanted to get involved.

“Residents like to get involved in projects in the community. As a forum, we like to get involved in projects and what better one than for a school in our community. When I saw Neil’s post, I put it out to people who would like to help with donations and the response has been great,” she said.

She said she encouraged people to drop off items at the school. Donations received so far include tins of food, some meat items and vegetables.

Neil said he was happy to get involved when the principal called him regarding the position.

“My passion is cooking, so this was a great opportunity. I’ve been helping out for the past month, Monday to Friday, and am enjoying it. The Department of Education stipulates what is on the menu for the children, but sometimes we cook a special treat for the kids. Quite a few residents have come to donate items, so we are very happy,” he said.

If residents want to help with donations, they are encouraged to call Heather on 074 203 2792 or WhatsApp 062 267 6535.
