KWAZULU-NATAL DanceSport School League (DSSL) hosted the second DSSL Inter Provincial Tournament from 13 to 15 July at Glenwood Boys High School.
The tournament, a three day dance competition, saw students aged between 11 and 18 compete in solo, duo and team events. KZN welcomed dancers from Gauteng, Western Cape, Mpumalanga and Mauritius.
Over 200 dancers took to the floor to strutt their stuff in the street dance genre. Every dancer had to perform certain pre-selected moves before showcasing their solo and duo pieces. The event culminated in the team competition whereby crews of three to eight dancers performed a two minute routine. Adjudicators were on hand to rank and scrutinise the dancers. From this, points were allocated and after all events these results were tallied.
Under 13 team coach, Sanusha Govender, said the eight girls from the KZN team all made it through to the finals for the solo event and took first, second and third place for the duo routines, knocking all the other provinces out of the competition.
KZN were crowned IPT Champions once again, after previously winning the accolade in 2017.

All dancers representing their provinces are accredited provincial colours and their schools are encouraged to recognise this achievement. The top eight dancers from each age group were selected to form an All Star Team to represent South Africa. Out of the eight member U13 team, six came from Sherwood Primary.
“We are very proud of the children who are dedicated and devoted. For us it isn’t about the medals they win, but the reward is to see them grow as people and dancers. We thank the principal, Mr Dean Unger, for his great support and for being there for them,” said Sanusha.
The KZN team will travel to the Western Cape to defend their title in July next year.

KZN DSSL currently has 14 schools on board and intends on increasing this number in 2019.
So far, Umhlali Preparatory, Ashton College, Khanyanjalo Primary, Maidstone Primary, Crawford North Coast, Sherwood Primary, Pinetown Senior Primary, Kloof High School, Durban North College, Westvile Girls High School, Thomas More College, St Marys DSG, Hillview and Durban Girls High School are associated with DSSL, where the first term is dedicated to having dance practices and fixtures between the opposing schools.
In the second term the provincial trials take place along with rehearsals for the IPT.
