Gang holds up students, resident

Residents are urged to be vigilant when at home and to ensure that security gates are locked during the day and at night.

BLUE Security has warned Glenmore and Carrington Heights residents to be vigilant after a gang of armed robbers held up students in their home and a resident in her garage in the area in the space of 24 hours.

Blue Security community and media liaison officer Andreas Mathios said it was unclear at this stage whether the incidents were linked to the same gang.

Mathios said the security company had received a panic alarm activation from a business premises alerting it to an armed robbery that had taken place at a house in Helen Baxter Road at around 12.50pm on 6 July.

“A gang of five robbers, two of them armed with firearms, arrived at the residential premises in a white Toyota Etios, where they held up students who live in the residence. They robbed the students of their cellphones, a television, a decoder, a watch and two bottles of alcohol,” Mathios said.

Mathios said in an earlier incident a woman was hijacked in her garage in Grundel Road in Carrington Heights on 5 July. The incident occurred at around 6.30pm.

“Three robbers entered the resident’s garage while she was busy parking her vehicle. They all produced firearms and demanded the keys for her vehicle and her gold earrings. They ordered her to lean against the wall before they sped off in her vehicle. No injuries were reported,” Mathios said.

Mathios advised residents to be vigilant when at home and to ensure that security gates are locked during the day and at night.

“Unfortunately opportunistic criminals will take advantage of a situation where doors or gates have been left unlocked so it is important to be security conscious and keep these locked. If you have external beams in the garden, make sure these are switched on when you are at home,” Mathios said.
