HOLY Family College’s new principal, Ursula Collings, has enjoyed her first term as the leader of the ‘family school’.
Ursula says her vision for the school’s learners is for them to be confident and productive, and to live up to the school’s motto, Quid Ritribuam, which means ‘what shall I render’.
“This is a powerful motto instilled in the Holy Family school community and I want to encourage the learners that in whatever they do, they should do it with excellence as God commands,” she said.
Ursula has 27 years of teaching experience, although she said she didn’t always want to be a teacher.
“I wanted to be a radiologist as I am passionate about the body, life and science. As a young child, my grandparents lived on a farm in Swaziland and I was exposed to nature first hand. This is where my appreciation of nature and the environment started. God somehow directed me into teaching and during my studies, I majored in life sciences or biology, history and professional education management,” she said.

Ursula qualified with her 4HDE in education, Honors in education and Masters in science and began her teaching career, what she now says was her calling, to be surrounded by learners who excitedly engaged in the world of science. Ursula worked at St Benedict School before she moved to Holy Family, ending up as HOD of the high school.
“As a past parent of Holy Family College I feel like this is a home away from home as my two sons were at the school. I was active on the PTA and my husband was on the board of governors. It is my humble privilege to be at this school where the staff, support staff and children are like a family and care for each other,” she said.
Outside of school hours, Ursula is a dedicated wife to Keith, and mom to her four children. She loves hiking and camping, enjoys reading motivational and spiritual books and is active in her church community at St Anne’s. She assists her husband at the family life desk at church, and is also the Chairperson for the Diocesan Pastoral Council for the Archdioceses of Durban and Chairperson of the Council of Laity, part of the Southern African Catholic Bishops Conference.
