Knitting group treats mums

Beanies and Blankets for Babies handed over a pile of items to moms at King Dinuzulu Hospital in Sydenham.

KNITTING group, Beanies and Blankets for Babies, handed over a pile of items to moms at King Dinuzulu Hospital in Sydenham to celebrate Mother’s Day.

The group, which was formed over four years ago is made up of a handful of dedicated and some occasional knitters. Founder, Snoeks Desmond, said the group donated items to 1802 babies at the hospital, about a third of the number of babies born at the hospital.

She said the group of knitters come from local church groups, women’s institute groups and women at retirement complexes, as well as individuals from as far as Australia, New Zealand, Scotland and England. Many people have found out about the group through their social media page.

“We believe in knitting with enthusiasm, giving with love and trust the items are going to people who need it,” said Snoeks.

The women knit beanies, receiving blankets and jerseys which are given directly to the mothers.

“It is important for us to give the items to the mothers, so people who knit for us know where the items are going. Some people also donate clothing for older children and adults which we give to the Sunflower Project in Creighton which supports abused women, the disabled and creches,” said Snoeks.

The women try deliver items to the hospital every week, usually on a Friday, and enjoy treating the women with little extras like lucky draws and ‘mommy bags’ of toiletries. They also give mums who lose their babies a small crocheted heart, toiletry and handmade card.

“It makes a difference to these mums to know they are thought of, and it works both ways. We have three ladies in their 90s supporting us, and it gives them purpose and something to do, and also for us who love to knit but don’t have anyone to give items to!” she said.

Snoeks encourages the community to donate new wool or left over wool from their projects and even items they have knitted and want to donate. There are buckets for donations at Berciles, Umhanga Rocks Drive, Umbilo Drapers in Queensmead Mall and One Stitch at a Time in Glenwood Centre.
