Thieves arrested by Durban Central officers

The men were arrested for business robbery and theft out of motor vehicle.

DURBAN Central Field Unit has carried out operations in the CBD recently in an attempt to reduce incidents of business robberies.

According to Const Zanele Khomo, on 21 June at about 1.30pm, Durban Central Crime Prevention officers arrested a man for theft out of motor vehicle.

“A suspect was found inside a grey Hyundai that was parked on Hunter Street. It is suspected that a remote jammer was used. The suspect was arrested and charged for theft out of motor vehicle,” said Khomo.

“We urge the community to make sure that they lock their vehicles and personally check the doors are locked,” she said.

In another incident at about 7.30pm on the same day, officers patrolling Dr Pixley Kaseme Street arrested a suspect for business robbery.

“It is alleged that the victim was at his place of work behind the counter serving customers when a man came in to buy cigarettes. While he was assisting him, he withdrew a firearm and forced the victim to lie down. He hit him with the back of the firearm and two other suspects entered the shop and took cigarettes, airtime, perfume and an undisclosed amount of cash before fleeing the scene,” said Khomo.

Police responded and one suspect was apprehended and arrested. The others are still at large. A police cap was recovered in the man’s possession.

Khomo said the suspect was arrested for business robbery and will appear in court soon.
