City probes stalled orange bag collection

"I watch the ordinary garbage collectors take away all the orange bags on my street."

MORE than eight months after the orange bag recycling project was temporarily suspended, the service has still not resumed.

Musgrave resident, Ryan Malcolm said he had been in contact with Durban Solid Waste since October last year trying to find out when recycling would recommence in the area.

“I watch the ordinary garbage collectors take away all the orange bags on my street and think it’s disgraceful that my neighbours are putting the effort into separating their waste, only for DSW to collect it all for the dump! It has now been eight months without collection of recycling when we were told it was recommencing at the beginning of February,” he said.

Responding to queries by Berea Mail, eThekwini Municipality’s Acting Head of Communications Mandla Nsele, thanked the resident for participating in the orange bag recycling project and bringing to the municipality’s attention the problems he was experiencing.

“The Unit did experience challenges with the collection of bags last year due to storm damages at the recycling plant. This was for a very short period and once it was fixed the collection reverted back to normal. Cleansing and Solid Waste (DSW) apologises for the inconvenience caused, the concerns will be investigated and addressed. Officials from the Unit will also be meeting with the resident,” he said.

He urged residents to contact the DSW Helpline on 031 311 8804, 031 322 0780 or email: kdbarec@durban.gov.za.
