Stella runners ready for ultimate race

Six women at Stella Athletics Club will be aiming to complete the Comrades Marathon on Sunday.

STELLA Athletics Club is promoting women legends and celebrating its women runners taking part in the Comrades Marathon on Sunday, 10 June.

The club’s Pat Fisher is aiming for her 30th Comrades finish on Sunday, Pat Freeman is hoping for her 29th finish, Helen Mann is going for her 27th finish, Gina Hinchliffe and Annie Harmsworth are hoping to make 25 finishes, and Louise Hucklesby will be aiming for her 22nd Comrades medal.

Pat Fisher, who was unable to complete the race last year, said she is feeling confident for her second 30th medal attempt.

“I’m going to make it this year as I’ll be running home! I didn’t have any support after Camperdown last year and my mind just didn’t want to run anymore. This year I’m running with my son Clint, who is doing his fourth Comrades so I’m looking forward to finishing. This is a big milestone and I’m feeling strong this year,” she said.

She will be the third woman ever to run 30 Comrades Marathons, as women were only allowed to compete in the race from 1975.

Freeman said she was looking forward to her run and was feeling fit this year.

“I have dedicated my run to raise funds for Community Chest before, but this year I have chosen to support CHOC,” she said. Pat said anyone wishing to support her run is encouraged to visit the Race4Charity page at www.comrades.com. Pat is a committed volunteer at CHOC and spends two hours a week in the ward interacting with sick children who have cancer.

“We have a deep history with the Comrades Marathon at our club and this year have 107 runners taking on the race, 22 of which are very excited novices. Phillip van Niekerk has run the most Comrades Marathons at our club, and is going for his 32nd finish,” she said.
