Body of newborn girl found in dustbin

Paramedics were alerted and arrived to find that the infant had been taken out the dustbin by a concerned individual.

THE body of a newborn baby girl was found on Tuesday  afternoon, 29 May, in a dustbin on Anton Lembede (Smith) Street in the Durban CBD.

ER24 paramedics arrived at the scene at around 1.15pm after being alerted by the local authorities. “Paramedics found the body of the newborn lying in plastic on the sidewalk. It is understood that the body had been taken out of the dustbin by a member of the public,” said Russel Meiring, ER24 spokesperson.

He said paramedics assessed the newborn and found no signs of life.

“Unfortunately, nothing could be done for the infant and she was declared dead. Details surrounding this incident are not yet known but local authorities will be investigating further,” he said.
