Golf challenge a success

CONGRATULATIONS to the Tafta golf teams who placed first to third at the Association’s 60th anniversary commemorative golf day on 10 May.

Durban corporates gave their full support for The Association for the Aged’s (Tafta) golf challenge at the Durban Country Club on Thursday, and Tafta Council Chairman, Wicus Jacobs expressed the association’s gratitude at having received such widespread support from those who registered teams to play and sponsored various holes at the fundraising event.

“The support we’ve received for such a worthy cause is overwhelming. Our elders are becoming the forgotten generation. Within the pressures of daily life, we fail to maintain these bonds and the inevitable loss of knowledge and life-skills that come with the older generation, are lost too. But Tafta is working hard to go beyond the role of providing shelter and care for this generation,” he said.

The golf challenge was won by the Nedbank team, Paul Haselau, Andrew Liebenberg, John Vasey and Mark Cousins.

Players from the East Coast team, Robbie Frylinck, Nathan Govender and Ryan Tully came second, with Bridge Fund Managers team, Lyall McNeil, John Swain, Colin Linnett and Michael Nolden third.

According to Jacobs, their commitment to encouraging the establishment of a society that embraces the value of elders is admirable.

“I believe an opportunity like the Golf Day and other fundraising events is the perfect platform to encourage corporates, including society in general, to get involved with what this wonderful organisation does. Become involved in the emotional nourishment of Tafta’s elders by engaging with them and help preserve their dignity into their golden years by supporting initiatives led by Tafta in future,” said Jacobs.

Jacobs, who has been involved with the organisation for several years as a volunteer and now serving as Chairman, said he was proud of the range of services Tafta offered to the community, with its outreach footprint being far greater than most NPO’s in KwaZulu Natal.

Proceeds from the Tafta tournament, which was a 4-ball format, once again benefited Tafta’s hot meal provision service, the Meals on Wheels programme.

“Escalating food prices is always a challenge and we are looking to communities and corporates to help us extend our reach to elders who are constantly in need of our care by participating at the golf event or through sponsorship,” said Tafta’s Income Development, Marketing and Public Relations Divisional Manager Gail Samuels.
