Teen is UKZN’s youngest graduate
Bulelani Mazibuko said he pursued his degree because of his interest to serve society and give back to his community.
BULELANI Msawakhe Mazibuko became the youngest graduate from the College of Humanities, to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy, Politics and Law at the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s graduation ceremony this week.
Mazibuko, (19), said: “I am excited and humbled that this moment has finally arrived. After all the sweat and tears, it has finally happened. It’s really a moment to remember and cherish,” he said.
Mazibuko said he pursued his degree because of his interest to serve society, give back to his community and to be in a field where he can deal with day-to-day issues facing modern day society, particularly in South Africa.
“I’ve had amazing support from my family and friends. My mom and dad would call, they still do, every day to check up on me and remind me of the importance of prioritising. Most of my friends are older than me. They are like my older brothers and I look up to them,” he added.

His family and friends were equally proud of his achievement. “I feel so proud of my brother to have graduated in record time and being the youngest graduate. I hope his peers will be inspired by him. As a family, we thank him for working so hard, but above all, we thank God for guiding and protecting him all the way. We wish him all the best as he furthers his studies,” said his sister, Nonkululeko.
His advice to other students following in his footsteps: “Have a purpose and make sure everything you do is getting you closer and closer to fulfilling that purpose. Prioritise, believe in yourself and work hard.”
Mazibuko is currently pursuing an LLB degree at the university.
