WATCH: Vessel collides with tug in Durban harbour

A car carrier collided with a tug in the harbour on Friday.

TRANSNET National Ports Authority has launched an investigation into a collision between a car carrier vessel and a tug in Durban harbour on Friday morning.

A video posted on social media shows the vessel, CSCC ASIA, operated by Hoegh Autoliners, colliding with the inactive tug Inyalazi while berthing alongside at the R-Shed in the port’s Point Precinct.

In a statement from Transnet, Nokuzola Nkowane, Acting Port Manager at the Port of Durban, said no injuries were reported as there were no employees on board the tug at the time of the collision.

“Damage occurred to the quayside and the tug sustained a hole on its side which has resulted in an ingress of water into the tug. Tug Umbilo was deployed to the site with a salvage pump to remove the water from Inyalazi,” said Nkowane.

She said divers and Port of Durban marine crew were on site to closely assess the extent of the damage for the purposes of blocking water from entering the tug, and SAMSA arrived at the scene to assess the damage to the tug and the commercial vessel.

“Port operations were not affected. The car carrier vessel was able to commence operation and the tug Inyalazi will be moved to the dry dock for repairs. The incident will be investigated,” said Nkowane.
