Cancer patient turns to community for medical support

A 43-year-old mother of two teenagers was recently diagnosed with stage 4 non-Hodgkins lymphoma.

WHEN 43-year-old mum, Dominique Manuel went to see her doctor for severe stomach pains she had no idea that his diagnosis would turn her life upside down.

Doctors discovered a 17cm mass engulfing her abdominal cavity which was placing severe pressure on her kidneys. Dominique, who has two teenaged children, was diagnosed with stage 4 non-Hodgkins lymphoma.

The devastating news came as a huge blow to the family who are faced not only with the stress of the disease, but the financial implications of Dominique’s medical treatment.

Through family funding Dominique was able to get testing and oncology treatment and through the generosity of doctors, who worked pro bono and negotiated reduced rates with the hospital, she was able to afford the surgery to place stents in each of her kidneys in an attempt to restore kidney function.

However, the medical costs of testing, chemotherapy and hospital stays are astronomical and family funding cannot cover the full amount, nor can her family cover the loss of income Dominique will incur during the next six to eight months as she undergoeschemotherapy.

“Dominique’s kidneys are okay now after receiving treatment for renal failure. She’s been in hospital undergoing chemo which is helping. She will need ongoing medical funding assistance so any donation no matter how small will be appreciated. She will need to go to Albert Luthuli for ongoing chemo treatment,” said Dominique’s sister, Charisse Boshoff.
