Learn the language of plants

Prof Braam van Wyk will speak on the senses of plants and how they communicate.

THE Botanical Society of South Africa will hold a national special general meeting at Durban Botanic Gardens Visitors Centre on Thursday, 8 March at 5pm.

Guest speaker is the renowned botanist, Prof AE (Braam) van Wyk who will speak on the senses of plants and how they communicate.

The fact that plants are anchored in one place, and do not show active movement or produce audible noises, makes it difficult for us to think of them as living beings. Yet it is increasingly recognised that plants are not just passive objects of the landscape, but highly sensitive organisms that perceive, assess, learn, remember, resolve problems, make decisions and communicate with each other by actively acquiring information from their environment. In this talk, some of these fascinating new insights will be highlighted in non-technical language.
