Learn about butterflies

Butterfly specialist, Américo Bonkewitzz, will host a butterfly training course at Durban Botanic Gardens this month.

A BUTTERFLY training course will run at the Butterfly Garden Training Centre, Durban Botanic Gardens, on each Saturday from 20 January to 17 February.

This is a unique opportunity for butterfly enthusiasts or anyone interested in having a better understanding on how to entice butterflies to their garden or to create their own butterfly enclosure for business purpose or personal enjoyment.

“There are so many roads in the world of butterflies that you can follow. You will decide which path you will take. I ended learning part of the local South African flora through the breeding of butterflies. Caring for butterflies creates an appreciation and an understanding about the forest and its importance for conservation, revealing all the dependencies and relationships within the ecosystem and then acquiring the power to boost it. Once you start raising butterflies, you will never see the forest in the same way. Everything gets a special meaning and that what people need in order to develop a passion for nature conservation,” said butterfly specialist, Dr Américo Bonkewitzz.

He said the whole idea of the course is to establish first a basic background on butterflies, then to go to a more indepth study while entertaining different breeding techniques and finally a general applicability of the knowledge gathered.

“If there is enough interest, I can also design a breeding course for children in February,” he said.

Registration started on 2 January. All enquiries can be addressed to info@butterflying.co.za or contact Dr Américo Bonkewitzz on 063 421 9000.

Cost is R770 per person, per module. It excludes any entry fee to nature reserves or game reserves during field trips. Total cost of the training course is R3850. There will be a 10 per cent discount if all five modules are paid in advance during the registration period (R3465), otherwise, payment is in advance corresponding to each module. Children can attend the introductory module and the cost is R350 per child.
