Police seek assistance in child theft incident

Assistance is being sought by Durban Central SAPS to find a woman who allegedly stole a child.

DURBAN Central Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offence Unit is appealing to the community for help in a case of child stealing they are investigating.

According to Const Zanele Khomo from Durban Central SAPS, it is alleged that on 20 November at about 3.45pm a woman aged 16 years was in Williams Road near the Chesterville taxi rank with her new-born baby girl.

“While she was at the taxi rank she was with an unknown female who she had met on the taxi travelling from the hospital to town. The woman offered to assist her with the baby while she went to the toilet. The mother left the child with the woman and when she came out of the toilet, she found that the woman had left with her child, leaving only a bag on the floor,” she said.

The woman asked people around if they had seen the woman leave with her baby. The mother does not have any photos of the baby.

“Police believe the female they have in an identikit can be of assistance in solving the case,” said Khomo.
