DUT hosts internationally acclaimed academics and researchers

The conference is expected to provide an opportunity for different stakeholders in the higher education sector.

THE Higher Education Learning and Teaching Association of Southern Africa (HELTASA) conference, hosted by the Durban University of Technology (DUT) is expected to provide an engaging platform for internationally acclaimed academics and researchers, who are earmarked to share their insights and cutting-edge research.

Senior Director of Corporate Affairs at the University, Alan Khan said the delegates are convening to stimulate the important critical and creative discourse covering higher education, diversity and social justice.

“The HELTASA conference is expected to provide an opportunity for different stakeholders in the higher education sector to interrogate and respond to the current challenges facing the sector. It brings to the fore academic conversations on the greater purpose of higher education and what the changing landscape and the impact of these developments have on institutions, students and other key role-players in the sector. There are various interesting sub-themes that the delegates from different institutions in South Africa will engage one another on. The conference includes workshops and critical dialogues,” said Khan.

Key academics in attendance will include Bal Chandra Luitel of Kathmandu University in Nepal, who is expected to provide expressive understanding on developing visions for fostering experiences of meaningful mathematical learning among students. Bal is a respected researcher hailed as a transformative educational researcher. He has worked in Portugal, Australia and Nepal. Professor Yusef Waghid is also expected to share his insights on educational policy. He is the distinguished Professor of Education in the Department of Education and Policy Studies at Stellenbosch University.

“Some key topics forming deliberations include addressing curriculum decolinisation through focus on education for sustainable development, tolerance as educational premise in higher education, 21st century graduate attributes: a critical reflection on undergraduate curricula at a South African University of Technology,” added Khan.

Shubnam Rambharos, of the DUT conference organizing committee, said they were excited to host the conference. “We are ready to receive our guests. We are really looking forward to a successful conference which will put to the fore, key national education issues.”

The conference, organized by DUT’s Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching, started on Tuesday and concludes on Friday.
