THE KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, Mxolisi Kaunda led a multi-disciplinary law enforcement operation on the Durban South Beach (Point) to rid the area of crime ahead of the festive season.
The operation which involved the SAPS, Durban Metro Police, Home Affairs and Customs started in the early hours of the morning by raiding nightclubs and dodgy buildings.
Police raided five buildings and nine night clubs.
Of the nine illegal immigrants who were arrested, six were wanted suspects. Police arrested another suspect for being in possession of drugs and an illegal firearm.

Kaunda said the operation was part of the November Safety Month activities which seeks to mobilise communities against the scourge of crime in the province.
He said the operations will continue up until the festive season and beyond.
“Durban is an economic hub of the province therefore we need all hands on deck to fight the scourge of crime so that the city can continue to be the destination of choice for holidaymakers and investors,” said Kaunda.

After the law enforcement operations, Kaunda addressed a business breakfast with the captains of industry in Durban and urged them to make contributions in the fight against crime.
Kaunda said that collaboration with business is crucial because government has limited resources.
“We urge the business sector to ensure that they beef up the security in their business precinct so that police can focus on fighting crime in the community. Together let us close ranks and drive criminals out of the city,” said Kaunda.
Business sector made contributions in the form of contributions in the form of donations to crime fighting structures.
