Watch: Environmental group picketing outside the Durban ICC

The organization says it is appealing to the energy regulator not to allow Eskom to increase its tariffs.

MEMBERS of the South Durban Community, Environmental Alliance are picketing outside the Durban ICC, where the NERSA hearings are happening.

The organization says it is appealing to the energy regulator not to allow Eskom to increase its tariffs.

Bongani Mthembu is the GIS and air quality officer at the Sadcea.

The regulator is holding a series of hearings across the country to gather responses to Eskom’s application for a general tariff hike of 19.9 percent and an increase of 27.5 percent for municipalities in the 2018/2019 financial year.

The hearings will end on November 16 and a decision is due on December 7.

If the hikes are approved, the general increase would take effect on 1 April, with the municipal increase on 1 July.
