Choppy seas challenge 031 swim contestants

There was an impressive turnout with just over 100 athletes, both young and old, ranging from 10 years to 74 years old.

PASSION, determination and bravery were on display at Saturday's annual Durban Surf Lifesaving 031 Swim at North Beach.

There was an impressive turnout with just over 100 athletes, both young and old, ranging from 10 years to 74 years old. The conditions were gruelling, with a strong easterly wind creating very choppy seas on the water. The competitors had their work cut out for them. Despite the tough conditions, the athletes headed onto the sand to tackle the iconic 031 Swim.

The heroes of the swim were lifesaving legends Wade Krieger and Carmel Bilson winning the 1.6km swim. The main event, the 3.1km, was won by Martin Binnedell and Kristin Bellingan both from Marine Lifesaving Club.
