Shakespeare Society meets to discuss the bard

Tamar Meskin spoke on the relevance of Shakespeare's works for today's youth at September's Shakespeare Society meeting.

THE Shakespeare Society in Durban invited Tamar Meskin to be the guest speaker at its September meeting.

Tamar, who is a lecturer in Drama Studies at UKZN, gave an informal talk entitled Shakespeare Must Fall. Her main focus was on the relevance of Shakespeare for today’s youth.

Her love for Shakespreare and the theatre began at an early age when her father introduced her to poetry and to Shakespeare’s plays. Many young people today do not have this rich literary upbringing and Tamar expressed her deep gratitute to her parents. Her talk, which focused on the production she directed at UKZN last October, was not only interesting, but also very informative and entertaining. Her passion for developing a love for theatre in her students was apparent in the way she expressed her love for her students and the work she is doing.

The Shakespeare Society meets every second Sunday of the month. Anyone interest in joining should contact the chairman, Patricia Devenish on 082 745 7264.
