WATCH: Golfers behaving badly goes viral

"We are not sure what the reasons are that might have led to the altercation. All we can say at this stage is that we are still investigating."

WHILE details are still sketchy on what might have caused a fist fight between two groups of golfers at Durban’s Athlone Golf Club, the video of the incident that shows two groups of men punching and kicking each other after what appears to be a verbal spat, has gone viral.

Postings on various social media platforms of the video claims the altercation ensued after racist comments were made by one group against the other.

However, the woman who filmed the incident, in an interview with the Daily News, said the incident related to an earlier incident between a group of female golfers and the one group of male golfers who had subjected them to aggressive, sexist and racist comments as they were making their way around the golf course.

She explained that the brawl between the two groups of men had arisen after the club’s vice-captain requested the names of the men who had harassed the women.

When Berea Mail contacted the club for comment, Club Manager Samantha Purdy, said the circumstances that led up to the brawl were under investigation.

“This is the first time this has happened at our club, we are not sure what the reasons are that might have led to the altercation. All we can say at this stage is that we are still investigating,” said Purdy.

Meanwhile, the video has elicited much commentary on Facebook with people slamming the racist tone and general bad behaviour depicted in the video, while others have criticised the club management for not stopping the fight before the first punch was landed. Others claim to have been thoroughly entertained by the video and blamed the incident on alcohol.
