DJ Helgé will be on the decks in RE: PLAY, on Saturday, 24 June at IN10SITY Night Club, 90 Old Main Road, Botha’s Hill, from 8.30pm to 5am.
Helgé Janssen needs very little introduction to the alternative scene in Durban. He was the founding DJ at Durban’s premier alternative club FACES, DJ’ing at the top floor. Once FACES closed its doors in 1986, Helgé began his own alternative dance club ventures DJ’ing at the Community Arts Workshop (CAW) as PLAY (’87/’88), at 330 on Friday nights (’89/’91), then at the Berea Inn on a Tuesday night until ’96. Thereafter he DJ’d at various parties, rewinds, and replays, most recently at Origin nightclub in 2016.
Helgé has been active in the art world, and has had many solo exhibitions of his paintings. He founded the avant-garde performance group the Body of Despondent Artists in the ’80s and wrote three plays for the group. Once the group disbanded he performed in two solo self-penned plays. All plays were performed at the Grahamstown Festivals.
