Hands on help to brighten up lives

"For many volunteers the Day of Caring is a learning experience and bonds are formed and developed for years to come."

THE Community Chest’s 19th annual Day of Caring held on Wednesday 29 March proved to be another moving experience for all those involved in making the lives of the less fortunate a little brighter.

In the midst of economic uncertainties, many companies remained dedicated to caring for the less-fortunate communities by getting involved in this project.

In a united show of strength and espousing a true sense of Ubuntu, eight corporate teams, Massdisconters/Game, Woolwoths Bluff, Smiths Manufacturing, Spar DC KZN, SA Navy and Katsi Youth in Action, tackled various painting and repair projects at eight Community Impact Partners in the greater Durban area.

Companies gave their employees the day off to complete the projects that these organisations are unable to do, either due to lack of resources or manpower, or both. It is not often that donors get to meet and become directly involved with beneficiaries of their funding. The Day of Caring becomes a meaningful and deeply rewarding interaction for all concerned.

“For many volunteers the Day of Caring is a learning experience and bonds are formed and developed for years to come. They get to see firsthand the joy and delights that their efforts help create for those less fortunate than themselves. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all sponsors, volunteers and project staff that have made Day of Caring the successful, rewarding calendar staple that it is,” said Gordon McDonald, director of Community Chest.

Ubuntu Community Chest assists many charitable organisations every year by proving funding for running costs and capacity building training. It is part of a national network of Community Chest SA, whose collective mission is to enhance communities and restore hope.
