Port Natal Bowls enters U15 team in national tourney

Local bowling clubs are encouraged to form a schools' league to promote the game among the youth.

BOWLS SA hosted its first National Inter-District Tournament for U15s from 4 to 7 April

The idea was to have a tournament to give young players exposure, and to accompany the U30s and U20s, to Bloemfontein.

Twenty teams from across the country took part, each playing four games of ten ends per day.

The four person team from Port Natal Bowls consisted of 13-year-old Chantal Walter-Girout of Firwood BC, 13-year-old Esti Shore of Stella Park BC, 14-year-old Megan Butler of Stella Park BC and 15-year-old Max Brand of Stella Park BC.

The young bowlers were introduced to the game through their parents’ involvement. Port Natal Bowls is hoping their affiliated clubs, of which there are 35 within its boundaries from Umhlali in the north to Winkelspruit and Amanzimtoti in the south and to Hillcrest inland, can spread the message.

“The association would love to have a school’s league, but for many years there has not been much enthusiasm shown by the schools,” said team manager, Rob Shore.
