Enforcement needed in Durban CBD

A resident said the area is filthy and the police and municipal departments are turning a blind eye.

EDITOR – I would like to know exactly what Metro Police intend doing with regards to the absolute chaos at Broad Street, Durban CBD, outside and all around SAPS.

Imagine the amount of money going to waste simply because Metro are very definitely not upholding the law and not actually doing their job! Outside the SAPS building vehicles park on the pavement obstructing the pedestrian walkway. Vehicles park next to those on the pavement in the parking bays. Next to those in the parking bays vehicles park in two, sometimes even three, of the driving lanes going down to the Esplanade.

To add to the chaos, directly across from SAPS is a liquor store. There is no parking on the pavement, but, other than that, the same scenario. Vehicles park in the parking bays. Next to those vehicles in the parking bays two of the driving lanes down to the Esplanade are also used for parking. What happened to the right of vehicles actually just driving down towards the Esplanade?

From a pedestrian point of view it is absolute chaos. The occupants of the vehicles simply park off, doors open, music blaring, blatantly consuming alcohol, bottles and whatever else thrown out of the vehicles all over the pavement and street! Absolutely filthy. Again, what happened to upholding the law?

Money for the City’s coffers going down the drain instead (also blocked by the way). People are drunk, disorderly, abusive, sleeping, passed out – you have to climb over them or walk in the road between all the parked vehicles occupying the actual driving lanes.

The area has totally become a health and safety hazard and a slum area, naturally all with the blessing of eThekwini Municipality and its forces (Law enforcement and Health Inspectorate).

Dirtbin City, disgusting, to say the least. At a loss for words. Bring the tourists to the area instead of by-passing same by using the Esplanade. The exposure could just help the residents of the area and the locals.
