SAIL Africa partners with iThemba Lethu

SAIL Africa has partnered with local NGO, iThemba Lethu to promote awareness of sailing among the youth in Cato Manor.
Jackie Barnard from SAIL Africa Youth Development Foundation approached iThemba Lethu in May 2016 with the intention of developing two sailing coaches from the community of Cato Manor to promote awareness of sailing as a sport and career.
However this initiative evolved through discussions with iThemba Lethu operations manager, Craig Bouchier and youth leader, Nkanyiso Mngadi, into an opportunity for 14 youth leaders from Wiggins Secondary School in Cato Manor to be given the opportunity to part take in a three day sailing course in December.
The learners were briefed about keelboat sailing, dinghy sailing, swimming and water safety training, boat maintenance and basic repair work, coaching training and were given the chance to sail on the last day.
This holiday club opportunity has now become an eight week extramural activity for these learners which started on Tuesday 31 January.
“The learners were very challenged but they rose above their fears. In my observation the youth have developed water skills and have behaved so well. This project is a huge success!” reported their inspired leader Nkanyiso Mngadi.
