Remember your lost loved ones

The community is encouraged to buy a heart to place on the Highway Hospice's Wall of Remembrance to honour loved ones lost to cancer.

RESIDENTS who have lost loved ones to cancer, are able to buy a small plaque in remembrance of them, to place on the Highway Hospice’s Tree of Remembrance.

Heather Walker from Highway Hospice said the organisation used to place plaques around the grounds, but decided to stop this.

“We came up with an idea to paint a Tree of Remembrance on the wall in our Garden of Remembrance where people can buy a heart for R500 in memory of their loved ones. This is something relatively new at Hospice, as it’s only been here for five months, and we really want people to know about it,” she said.

Heather said there were currently 19 hearts for former staff members and people’s loved ones placed on the tree, and that there was a lot of space for many more to be put up.

“The family can have whatever they want written on the heart, and it is important that they put the heart up themselves, as this is very special. They are also able to take photos to send to other family who might be overseas,” she said.

She said the Garden of Remembrance itself was looking a bit shabby, and she encouraged any volunteers to get involved in sprucing it up as the organisation doesn’t have the manpower to do it.

“We only have one gardener at Hospice, and the grounds are very big, so it would be lovely if people could come and spend some time replanting and maintaining the garden and repairing and painting the small shelter, which was put up by one of the families last year. This is a very important garden and we want it to be attractive,” she said.
