WATCH: Umbilo Streets come under security surveillance

"This is phase one of the project. Phase two will be a vehicle purely for the CIP."

THE Bulwer Community Improvement Project (CIP) took another step forward this week with the introduction of an Enforce Security vehicle which will patrol the Umbilo area.

The launch of the patrol vehicle in the area was welcomed at a launch on Tuesday morning. A motorcade of Enforce vehicles made their way through the streets in the area, led by Bulwer Ambassadors and the two forces behind the project, Heather Rorick and Chris Beresford who also addressed patrons sitting outside restaurants along Helen Joseph Road.

Speaking about the project, Enforce’s community project manager, Nikki Mohlmann, said the designated vehicle would patrol the Umbilo area.

“The idea was initiated with the CIP and the work we are doing with Heather, as well as the increase in crime in the area. This is phase one of the project. Phase two will be a vehicle purely for the CIP, which will include cameras, in-car monitors and investigations into crime in the area,” she said.

Mohlmann said she started working with Rorick in February last year to get the project off the ground.

“We can’t do this without the tools that we need. During the motorcade, leaflets were handed out to the public informing them about the project and what the CIP entails and aims to do in the area, to encourage more people to get on board,” she said.

Mohlmann said a meeting would be held next week to introduce the community to the concept. For Rorick, the launch of the patrol vehicle is an exciting step forward for the project..

“There were a lot of doubters, with people saying it wouldn’t happen, but it has! There is still a lot more to happen and I look forward to working towards getting partnerships formed and for many more businesses to join us. We are definitely going to take the area back regarding crime and grime. We aim to extend our reach further and need more companies to come on board,” she said.
