Help the elderly keep fit

Volunteers are needed to help with a community initiative.

VOLUNTEERS are needed to help with a community initiative to keep pensioners living at Westgate Gardens fit and active.

Ward 27 councillor Martin Meyer, said the idea to start fitness classes at the housing estate was borne after a productive meeting with two residents from Westgate Gardens last week.

“For those who do not know, Westgate Gardens is a council owned block of flats situated in Ward 27. The flats are for people with limited financial resources, the elderly and disabled. We, together, identified four projects for the flats, but we need the community of ward 27 to once more stand up and show their community spirit,” said Meyer.

He said senior citizen fitness classes was the first project that would be tackled in 2017.

“Westgate has a very large number of pensioners. We would like to encourage healthy living by hosting a weekly fitness class aimed at the senior residents of Westgate. The idea is also to host occasional talks by experts like dietitians and so forth,” he said.

Meyer said if anyone with experience in hosting exercise classes was willing to offer an hour a week to the community to assist these residents, they should contact him via email on: ward27@ethekwini.org.
