Surrender unwanted firearms

"It is important to hand firearms in, to prevent the risk of these being stolen and making their way onto the streets."

UMBILO SAPS encourages people who would like to dispose of firearms for whatever reason, to hand them over to the police.

Capt Pumzile Makaula said a community member handed in his late father’s gun last week, and she encouraged others who knew there were guns in their homes which they did not need, to surrender them to the Umbilo SAPS.

“It is important to hand these firearms in, to prevent the risk of these being stolen and making their way onto the streets,” she said.

She said on Tuesday a suspect who was in possession of a firearm and ammunition was arrested by the Umbilo SAPS crime prevention unit.

“The man was found in possession of a 7,65 Vektor pistol. He was arrested in Sydney Road and charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition,” she said.

Col Gerald Mkhize, station commander of Umbilo SAPS, assured the community the police are working to ensure a happy and safe 2017.

“We warn the community to be aware of car hijackings around the university especially during this time of the year when registration is in full swing. All students should avoid walking around with cellphones in their hands and avoid wearing earphones when walking,” he said.
