Durban lines up full programme of events for holiday season

eThekwini has a full programme of events planned for Durban and surrounding communities and visitors over the festive season.

DURBAN is the place to be this festive season with a full programme of events lined up for the holidays to entertain locals and visitors alike. It is hope the events will have a positive economic spinoff for the city and promote social cohesion.

The Cool Out Vintage event is a celebration of music, fashion and art that takes place at the Rivertown Beerhall on 25 December. Here you can chill in a atmosphere that includes art exhibitions, vintage pop-up stalls and a platform for artists to market themselves.

On 16 December, get yourselves down to the Rivertown Beer Hall for a feast of music, street art, street fashion and graphic design.

Ten designers, 20 pop-up stalls, 10 undiscovered artists and 10 emerging chefs will get an opportunity to showcase their work at the Food fashion Music at the Park, taking place on 17 December at the Bay of Plenty. The programme aims to discover emerging, young talent in the city. Young fashion designers, chefs and artists audition to stage their work.

The uThongathi Beach Festival and Competition will take place on 18 December and is aimed at promoting cultural preservation and reminding the youth of their traditions. It will also teach them to keep the beaches clean and educate them on safe swimming.

Durban Underground 2016 takes place on 25 December and intends bringing all races to one event under the promotion of peace, harmony and understanding. Both well-known and emerging artists are part of the event to be held at the Wave House Virginia Airport.

The Grand Finale New Year’s Eve event will take place on 31 December at Kings Park Stadium with well-known artists performing on the day. Approximately 3 000 people are expected to attend the event.

The Izintombi Zomhlanga Cultural Celebration is an event aimed at celebrating young girls who still respect their culture and attend Umhlanga.  Royal King Zwelithini and his house will be invited to speak to the young girls on 7 January at Engonyameni Sports Ground.

Good Sundae takes place on 18 and 25 December and is a lifestyle event where City trendsetters gather in one venue to enjoy the best hip hop acts.

Durban Braai Day is on the cards for 26 December. This is a first time event  that aims to attract 8 000 to 12 000 attendees at the Moses Mabhida Stadium’s People’s Park and will be a fun-filled family day out. There is a KwaMakhutha New Year’s Eve Picnic planned for 31 December. The family orientated event will create job opportunities and promote social cohesion.
