CGA athletes claim top prizes at national 10km champs

The province claimed team gold medals in both the men's and women's seniors category.

Central Gauteng Athletics’ Andries Sesidi and Nicolaus Seoposengwe claimed a top two finish at the national 10km championships at Pilditch Stadium in Pretoria on August 13.

The athletes ran side by side for the majority of the event but it was Sesidi who pulled away a few kilometres from the finish to claim first place, clocking 28:57.

Seoposengwe had to fight off KZN Athletics’ Mbuleli Mathanga for the second position. He crossed the finish in 29:12 with Mathanga coming in three seconds later to complete the top three.

“Central Gauteng Athletics congratulates all athletes who participated at the national championships.

“As the province, we are glad to have athletes who were determined to defend the top position at this year’s championships with exceptional performances and great teamwork,” said CGA’s Mandla Radebe.

Sibusiso Nzima and Kabelo Seboko both finished in the top 10, guaranteeing the province the team gold prize for the senior males.

In the women’s race, CGA’s Lebo Phalula finished third while teammate Cacisile Sosibo finished fourth. The race was won by Athletics North Gauteng’s Glenrose Xaba with Athletics Free State’s Kesa Molotsane claiming second place.

The province had five women who finished at the top and this granted the province another team gold medal in the seniors’ category.

“Our ladies put up a great contest especially as we continue to celebrate women during Women’s Month. We are proud to have witnessed our female athletes contesting the podium positions,” Radebe added.

Nicolene Hanekom, who finished eighth overall, claimed the first position in the veteran category in a time of 36:46. Jaylene Cloete secured a gold medal in the junior women category, clocking 37:47 with Ntokozo Gumede taking bronze, finishing in a time of 39:19.

The province’s Johannes Malisela Kekana grabbed a gold medal in the 50-54 age group category after clocking 31:45, placing him in the top 20 at the championships at the age of 50.

“The CGA is very proud of all athletes who showcased exceptional dedication and energy at the championships. It was a great day at the office indeed with the CGA flag flying high,” said CGA president Steven Khanyile.
