Benoni young creatives gather at City’s Showcasing Concert

Performing art disciplines included poetry, dance, disc jockeying, storytelling, music and marimba bands.

The OR Tambo Cultural Precinct in Wattville was full of activity as the City of Ekurhuleni hosted the second edition of the Showcasing Concert on June 11.

This year’s showcasing concert was bigger and better with more performing arts disciplines such as poetry, dance, disc jockeying, storytelling, music and marimba bands.

In celebration of youth month, scores of young people from Benoni showcased an exhibition of thrilling performances using their artistic skills.

The event was also attended by the Executive Mayor Tania Campbell, who told attendees the city was always excited by the prospect of young people showcasing their talent through artistic and creative means.

“As a multi-party coalition government, we see youth month as an opportunity to reflect on how we better tackle youth unemployment in the city and bolster youth development.

“The showcasing concert is a testament to our commitment to ensuring young people use their time productively and stay away from any destructive behaviour,” said Campbell.

She further stated that the city has been providing development workshops, master classes and training for the arts communities.

“I want people to know that as the government, we are committed to prioritising youth development in the city,” said Campbell.

The mayor explained that the Youth Film and Multimedia Development Programme will provide basic film and editing techniques to young people to be appointed through the PEP programme.

“Our Young Community Radio Broadcasting Programme includes EKU FM and Voice of Thembisa where community radio stations will train young people in broadcasting techniques.

“The Ekurhuleni Young-Stars Outreach Programme is focused on musical-drama, dance-drama and storytelling workshops and we have secured facilitators such as Gcina Mhlophe, Tu Nokwe, Patricia Boyer, DJ Gregory Hlathswayo and many more who have great expertise in their area of creative expression,” said Campbell.
