Upcycle toilet rolls into fun binoculars

These binoculars will not only encourage your child to engage in STEAM, but they are also a good method to upcycle toilet paper rolls.

What child does not enjoy pretend play? Pretend play is not only an excellent way for children to develop their social and emotional abilities, but it is also a fun way for them to explore and make sense of their surroundings. The key to elevating a decent pretend game is often found in the shape of an accessory – a child pretending to be a firefighter would be nothing without the helmet!

A set of DIY binoculars is essential for achieving the zen-like state of mind of bird watchers or refining the observatory look of animal behaviourists.

What you need

  • Scissors
  • Two unused toilet paper rolls
  • White glue
  • Ribbon or string
  • Construction paper
  • Markers
  • Crayons
  • Stickers
  • Tissue paper (optional)

How to make it

  1. Begin by tying your toilet paper rolls together. We chose three glue dots to hold ours together. If the binoculars will be handled frequently, we recommend adding white glue or hot glue for a more secure hold.
  2. Allow the adhesive to cure before proceeding to the next step.
  3. Choose the paper you want to use to cover your binoculars.
  4. Wrap the paper around the binoculars’ breadth and clip the excess using scissors. To secure it around the rolls, use glue dots.
  5. Let your child decorate their binoculars in any way they choose! They can be painted, coloured with crayons or markers, collaged with tissue paper, covered with washi tape or stickers, and even bedazzled.
  6. If your child wants to wear the binoculars around their neck, include a strap. The string should be measured and cut. Then, approximately a 1/2 inch from the top, cut a small hole on the outside edge of each roll using scissors.
  7. Thread one end of your string through the hole you made. To secure, tie a knot. Repeat with the opposite side of the string.
