Reduce your son’s future risk of developing prostate cancer

Some behaviours linked to cancer risk typically start during youth, making interventions focused on young people particularly important.

As parents, we not only want to ensure our children are healthy right now, but that they remain healthy across their lifetime.

Although there is no proven way to completely prevent prostate cancer, parents may be able to lower their sons’ risks by ensuring they adopt healthy eating habits.

Prostate Cancer: Prevention

One in 31 boys have a lifetime risk of developing prostate cancer later in life. Prostate cancer is primarily a ”disease of ageing”. As your son gets older, their chances of developing prostate cancer increases. Race and genetics also play a significant role.

Take a look at your son’s diet

According to renowned dietician and CEO of the 5-a-Day for Better Health TRUST, Jane Badham, a diet rich in fruit and vegetables can assist in preventing prostate cancer later in life.

Encourage your son to eat less trans fats and saturated fats. Focus on healthy fats such as omega-3 fatty acids from nuts, seeds, and fish. It’s also important that parents don’t feed their children charred meat. Charred meat, from frying or grilling at high temperatures, may produce a chemical compound that leads to cancer later in life.

A word on avocados

One fruit, in particular, that’s garnering much scientific interest is the humble avocado. Researchers at the University of California have found that the high levels of mono-unsaturated fats in avocados are responsible for the absorption of bioactive compounds, such as vitamin E, lutein and carotenoids, which have been shown to contribute to cancer risk reduction.

Ensure your son exercises regularly

In addition to helping your son achieve a healthy weight, exercise can reduce inflammation, improve immune function and fight some of the negative health effects of a sedentary lifestyle – all of which can help prevent cancer later on in life.
